You see Emerald here; this was yesterday, July 7th. She slept all day! So much so that Winston was growing concerned enough to come check on her and meow at her to see if she'd respond.
Friday, she was outside all day; I always get my cats in for the night just because, in the rural area where we live, there are night predators like eagles and foxes. There are also a few dogs that go after cats... So I get them in whether they want to or not. Occasionally they will insist on remaining outside if the house is too hot or after a particularly hot day. Generally, they are indoors for the night.
Emerald decided on Friday to remain out of doors all night. It was apparently not enough to go gallivanting all day; but the night was cool and she was off across the road in the bush. She's quite careful in going across the road, she stops, looks both ways and darts! She doesn't stick around for cars, she's just gone. Anyway, by 7 and 8 am Saturday morning, I was getting worried. The night before I had called and called ~ No Emmy ~ and she still wasn't responding to my calls by the night morning. My husband came in from work at 9 am and shortly after he spotted her trotting up the drive!!
Finally she'd decided to come home from wherever she was. She was both hungry and tired. So tired that she spend the entire Saturday slumbering indoors; actually because of the rain and threat of thunderstorm, all the cats stayed inside. When they wanted to go out in the mid-evening, they weren't allowed. The pictures in yesterdays blog show Molly greeting and looking after Em! I thought it was so cute because Molly is holding her head down... not that she had too, Emmy was passed out!

Priceless
I love my cats and any animal God created. They deserve our care and attention simply for being themselves and adding so much to our lives.
Can you conceive of a world with no animals in it? Can you imagine your family without your pets?
What we consider a 'humble' animal; those that we raise for the purpose of killing for our tables, too often SHAME us with their own brand of compassion.
Can you conceive of a world with no animals in it? Can you imagine your family without your pets?
What we consider a 'humble' animal; those that we raise for the purpose of killing for our tables, too often SHAME us with their own brand of compassion.
Often they learn to get along better than we do...
Animals, of all species, add a grace to our lives that we would otherwise sorely lack.
They grace us with their humor...
Their loyalty, love and companionship...
How DARE we treat them this way????
If we are SHAMED, we deserve what accompanies that shame!
Remember, this summer, to take extra special care of the animals ~ cats, dogs, cows... ~ and practice what YOU PREACH!
Simple kindness to what we call 'dumb' animals is also simple compassion on our part. Do you lack that?
I find it extremely disquieting that in our day and age there are those among us who still need a whack upside the head as a reminder. What does this lack of compassion say about us?

~*~*~ Its Time Once Again For... *~*~*
Cat Collar With Bell ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
During last years' winter months I put cat collar with bell on my four felines so I'd be able to hear them whether they were out of doors or in the house somewhere. Its quite the tale to tell, really. Their reactions to having a constant quiet jingle close to their ears every time they moved, scratched or shook themselves was quite comical. At first it was merely adjusting to having an alien cat collar with bell around their necks where nothing had been before; they didn't react to the bells until they moved. Sassy and Molly, being much older and wiser and old hats at this sort of thing ignored both cat collar and bell; just accepted them.
Emerald and Winston, however, had different reactions. Winston's was confusion to his cat collar with bell, he couldn't figure out where all that noise was coming from every time he moved and figured that maybe the best strategy would be to 'run' from the noise until he realized the jingle from his cat collar with bell was following him wherever he went so, problem solving cat that he is, he went to his mother, Molly, for advice and observed the way she handle this new and intrusive situation. After watching her ignore cat collar with bell, he began to get used to his own cat collar with bell and learned to ignore it as well.
Then there's Emerald.
Totally and singularly unimpressed, she fought with what she regarded as her 'new enemy' and managed to get the cat collar with bell caught, twice no less ~ once on her tooth and another time, in her claw. Immediate rescue and relief came in the form of tightening up the too-loose cat collar with bell so she was no longer able to attempt maneuvering it over her head.
Is she a smart cat or what! It annoys her to 'jingle' when she is strategizing catching a bird and its totally funny to watch her as she adjusts her body and behavior so she can still stalk them but in the end, not catch them.
Her mother, Sassy, hunts the over-numerous mice, voles and rats on the dairy and leaves the birds alone, completely. She's developed strategies where, while hunting, she is able to keep her cat collar with bell completely quiet. Sassy only jingles when she wants too.

Its A Molly-Sneak!
I can always tell when Molly is bored, she picks up and plays with the blue plastic ring from a peanut butter jar, happily yowling and chattering to herself while racing after it, getting it lost under the mini carpet in the kitchen or tossing it in the air.
Other times she amuses herself sneaking up on an unsuspecting Sassy. Its funny to watch as she stealthily picks her time to give Sassy a 'what for' swat and waits to the predictable reaction.
Life is never boring living with 4 cats!

Molly's Introduction
Cat Friend One
There’s
this noise that becomes a scratching, then a weight against my back; my cats
are up before I am again this morning and are unobtrusively demanding that I rise
to greet the day with them. What does it mean when Emerald sits on top of me,
batting my nose at 6 am? Is it a ‘get up already and feed me!’ or a ‘good
morning, I clicked the button and the coffee is on.’ You can almost hear the
sing-song in her meow, almost.
I’m
up. Sassy wants outside, Molly wants to be left alone, Emerald is demanding her
treat and laid back Winston is just waiting for something to happen; another
typical day in the Stewart household. All four have completely different
personalities that clash, rather loudly and dramatically at times. Molly is my drama
queen, Emerald is a very moody princess; if there was a cat click, she’d be the
one dominating it! Sassy is the ever
practical wise mother/matron and Winston, my schoolboy, just seems confused
most of the time about what the big deal is between these three girls. So
that’s our warm and fuzzy family.
I
will introduce Molly first. Merrill surprised me with this little bundle of
delight just after we lost one of our beloved males one night to a car on the
dirt road outside our trailer in Alberta. She was a tiny black and white kitten
that grew up with Boo, our remaining male. Boo looked over his whiskers at an
over- enthusiastic, bouncy kitten who had moved in just when he’d just lost his
brother Greymalk but by the time she was half grown they were inseparable;
buddies to the end! Molly turned out to
be rather too clever for her own good at times, even as a baby she’d get
herself into trouble with her escapades. Oh the tribulations!
She
was originally raised to be an indoor cat; safety, longer life, health issues
and all that. But she would jealously watch whenever Boo was let outside then she’d
send up a pitiful wail all full of ‘Life’s just not fair!’ and hammer at the
door until it was showing signs of being shredded, after that she dashed from
window to window trying to see where Boo was outside. I remember her silently and
resolutely plotting my downfall as she sat and scornfully glared at me; seeing
I was unmoved by this expression of harrumph she adopted another scheme and would
follow me from room to room as I opened the windows early on hot days to cool
the trailer. Somewhere in her mind’s eye a strategy was forming.
Maybe,
just maybe if she pushed hard enough on the mesh that covered the open window,
she could tear a hole in it and get outside. I became suspicious of her designs
on my window screens too late when I realized she was suddenly and unusually
too quiet, I went to check on her. Yep, that’s exactly what she did. Now a
lovely cool breeze was coming through the flapping mesh along with every flying
bug in the neighborhood to take up residence in my spare room. Arrrg!
One
Saturday morning when Merrill was working on adjusting the pipes from the hot
water heater to the underground tubing under the trailer, Molly found this a
fascinating occupation to watch. She also found that she could just squeeze her
little body through the opening and the great outdoors awaited. Unfortunately,
it was later in the evening while I was wondering where she’d gotten herself to
that I realized she might have gotten outside again. That sent hubby out the
door, at my express command to crawl under the trailer with a flash light to
find her, sitting rather uncertainly, on the end of the pipe at 10 o’clock at
night and mount a rescue operation.
Eventually
I just gave up and let her go out on supervised excursions when I was working
in the garden. She quickly improved her techniques for avoiding capture when it
was time to come in but Boo usually knew where she was and kept an eye on her.
How she loved being outdoors exploring every nook and cranny of her
environment.
Thus
started many an adventure with our new companion and family member that would
eventually take us all on a cross Canada road trip from Penhold, AB to Prince
Edward Island and to new, more bizarre adventures.
